You've Got Mail

You’ve Got Mail

There are two ways you can receive mail. The first is through Outlook and the other is in D2L. Common questions are what is the difference and why do I have both? The answer to those two questions and a few other will be answered in here.

The Difference & Why

Outlook is used most often for communicating within the college. Instructors and student service offices will send emails using Outlook and college news/updates will be sent there as well. You can access your mail in Outlook online or download the Outlook app to your phone.

How to access Outlook email

D2L is the platform used for online learning. It has built in email messaging that instructors and students can use to communicate. Using course email within D2L will keep all course related questions, reported issues, correspondence, etc. in one place without it getting mixed in with non-course information. You can also see when someone has read your email.

You cannot send email from D2L to Outlook. Try doing that and you will receive what is known as a bounce back message/error message.

Sending an email in D2L is easy. Simply click Classlist from the top of the D2L page then select the instructor or student you want to email and compose a message.

Send an email in D2L

“So, do I have two emails?”

The answer is yes. You have an Outlook email address; this is referred to as your TTC email address and what you use to log in. You don’t get your D2L email address because it can only be used within D2L.

Keep in mind….

You cannot receive D2L email in Outlook. Outlook email will not ever be in D2L.
You cannot send emails from within D2L to a TTC email address. It will result in an error and your message won’t be received by the recipient.
